The Blue Sapphire Plymouth Rock is a hybrid resulting from the cross of a Plymouth Barred Rock hen and a Blue Andalusian rooster. It is a production breed — meaning it was produced for high egg yield — and lays 4-5 extra large eggs per week. It is also sex-linked, meaning males and females are distinguishable at birth. The Blue Sapphire has a striking blue-gray plumage and often has some light barring of the feathers. The Blue Sapphire is often confused with the Blue variety of Plymouth Rock. Whereas the latter is a recognized breed, the Blue Sapphire Plymouth Rock, a hybrid, cannot be considered a breed.
