The Cornish Cross (also called the Cornish Rock) is a meat bird. It is a cross between the Cornish and the White Plymouth Rock breeds. This breed grows very quickly and will reach 5 to 8 pounds within 8 to 10 weeks. Most of the chicken you buy in the grocery store is the Cornish Cross. It is known for its wide stance and oversized breast, and is highly desired for its white meat. The Cornish Cross has sparse feathers and does not do particularly well in cold weather. It is mostly sedentary and prone to developmental issues. Choose this breed only if you intend to butcher your chickens.
