The Freedom Ranger and Red Ranger are hybrids developed specifically for the harvesting of their meat. Unlike the Cornish Cross, which is not very active, Rangers thrive when allowed to run about. For this reason, the Ranger is recommended only if you are able to let your chickens range. The Freedom Ranger will reach 5 to 6 pounds in 9 to 11 weeks, while the Red Ranger will be 4 to 5 pounds. Both types of Rangers have a breast, leg and thigh that are more proportional than the Cornish, which has an enlarged breast and a noticeably wide stance. Rangers have more natural fat than the Cornish Cross, which is likely why many people say the Ranger is superior in taste, texture, and tenderness.
