The Australorp is one of the larger chicken breeds, similar in size to the Orpington. The black variety has feathers that take on a gorgeous purple and green hue in sunlight. For this reason (and because it is a prolific layer!) the Black Australorp is a favorite among backyard chicken owners. Because its feathers retain heat more than other breeds, the Black Australorp needs access to shade during extremely hot months. In its native country, Australia, the white, black and blue varieties are recognized as official breeds, however only the black is considered a heritage breed in the United States.
