The Welsummer is named for the village in the Netherlands where it originated. It was first bred as a meat bird but has become desirable among backyard chicken keepers for its dark brown egg, which also has reddish tones. The Welsummer is a highly intelligent breed and generally friendly. It’s neck and nape feathers are golden brown with darker brown shading, which gives them the appearance of having a golden mantle. The varieties of the Welsummer include the gold duckwing, silver duckwing and partridge, with only the latter recognized in the U.S. as a heritage breed.
