The Sussex is a heritage English breed. There are many varieties but only the light, red and speckled are recognized as heritage breeds by the American Poultry Association. The Sussex is a regal-looking breed and in fact, a variety was developed specifically for the coronation of the King of England. While all chickens are naturally curious, the Sussex is particularly prone to following you around to see what you’re up to. It’s also known to be rather vocal. The Sussex is a heavy bird that is often raised for meat as well as eggs. The recognized varieties are light, red and speckled.
