Like the Cochin and Polish, the Silkie is considered an “ornamental” breed. Silkies are adored because of their appearance. With plumage that looks more like hair than feathers, they resemble a large puff ball! Silkies are typically raised for show or entertainment, not for their eggs or meat. They are an extremely family-friendly breed, but tend to be dominated by other members of the flock. The Silkie is prone to broodiness and is also not particularly predator savvy. If you are wanting a pet that is very friendly, loves attention and is a good mom to young chicks, the Silkie is a good choice. The recognized varieties include black, blue, buff, gray, partridge, splash and white. Some have beards while others do not.
