Rhode Island Red
Purpose: Dual Purpose
Egg Production: 4-5 / wk
Egg Color: brown
Origin: United States
Heritage breed: Yes
The Rhode Island Red is a great layer, producing 4 to 5 extra-large eggs per week. The hen is quite striking, with reddish-orange eyes and a coat that is typically a deep rust color accented with deep yellows. The Rhode Island Red was originally developed as a dual-purpose breed and was once a staple on small farms throughout the U.S. It became so popular that Rhode Island, where it originated, made the Rhode Island Red its official state bird. While it remains a dual purpose breed to this day, it is mostly raised for egg production. The Rhode Island Red is a particularly hardy bird that adapts to all weather extremes. It is a friendly breed but not particularly cuddly. Many people say the Rhode Island Red can be very aggressive toward other breeds, while others say they’ve never experienced any such behavior.
