The Polish chicken: for those times in life when you need comic relief. (Just look at them!) This breed is typically kept for show but is popular among backyard flock owners due to its outrageous appearance and extremely docile nature. (Of all the breeds, the Polish is probably the best cuddler.) The history of this breed is a bit of a mystery. Many believe it originated in Spain, but was perfected in The Netherlands. The name could be from the old Dutch word “pol” which means “large head.” It could also be derived from its similarity to the helmet of Polish soldiers, which at one time sported an array of feathers. If you want a fun, cuddly breed and don’t care how many eggs you get, the Polish might be a good choice. Be aware that their large crest may also require additional care. Recognized varieties of the Polish include non-bearded black crested white, bearded and non-bearded buff laced, bearded and non-bearded golden, bearded and non-bearded silver, bearded and non-bearded white, non-bearded white crested black and non-bearded white crested blue.
