The Plymouth Rock, originating in The United States, is among the most popular backyard chicken breeds. It is one of the oldest American breeds, and through the 1940s was the main source of meat and eggs in the U.S. The barred variety (commonly known as the Barred Rock) has distinctive barred (striped) feathering. The varieties recognized as heritage are the barred, blue, buff, Columbian, partridge, silver penciled and white. The barred and white varieties are common, while the rest are rare.
