Orpington
Purpose: dual purpose
Egg Production: 3-4 / wk
Egg Color: Brown
Origin: England
Heritage breed: Yes
The Orpington is one of the friendliest of the family-friendly breeds and for this reason they are one of the most popular. Their eggs are large and brown and they lay on average 3 to 4 per week. The Orpington is a large breed that will stand a bit taller than most of your other hens. They also weigh a bit more than most other breeds, but their “fluffy” feathering makes them appear heavier than they actually are. The buff, black, blue and white varieties are recognized as heritage breeds but the splash and lavender are not. The buff is by far the most common.
