Heritage breed: Yes

The New Hampshire was developed in the northeast United States, where hardy breeds are needed to withstand what can be very brutal winters. Using the Rhode Island Red as a base, breeders developed the New Hampshire to grow rapidly, feather out quickly and have a meaty body. While this new breed could lay, it was bred primarily for the commercial broiler industry. The New Hampshire and Rhode Island Red are often confused for each other, as they both have red feathering and black lacing in the tail feathers. However, the New Hampshire is lighter in color and tends to also have black feathers in its neck and wings. It also does not lay as many eggs as the Rhode Island. The New Hampshire varieties include the blue-tailed, red and white with only the red being officially recognized.
