The Naked Neck is one of the strangest breeds you’ll meet. It is also known as a Turken or Churkey, a reference to the crossing of a Turkey and Chicken. However that is not this breed’s origin; it is 100% chicken. The Naked Neck’s neck and much of its breast are featherless, the result of a gene and intentional breeding. This breed is believed to be from the Transylvania region of Romania and was developed with the goal of a bird that is easy to dress. And, indeed it is: the Naked Neck has smooth skin and 50% fewer feathers than other breeds its size. Despite its sparse plumage, the Naked Neck is surprisingly cold hardy. There are more than 10 varieties; however only the black, buff, red and white are officially recognized.
