If you want a chicken that is striking based on sheer size alone, the Jersey Giant is for you! They are by far the largest purebred chicken breed, larger than the Orpington, Brahma, Langshan and Cochin. Mature males will weigh up to 13 pounds (5.9 kg) and stand 2 feet tall (60 cm) and females up to 10 pounds (4.5 kg) and 1.5 feet (45 cm). Jersey Giants are extremely docile and family-friendly, but their size can be intimidating to very small children. They are a dual purpose bird but are slow to reach harvest weight compared to other meat breeds. The Jersey Giant lays extra large eggs that vary in color from rich brown to light brown to cream. The recognized varieties include blue, black and white.
