Dominique
Purpose: dual purpose
Egg Production: 3 / wk
Egg Color: brown
Origin: United States
Heritage breed: Yes
The Dominique is recognized as America’s first heritage chicken breed and was likely developed from a combination of European breeds (and possibly some from Asia). It was a widely popular dual purpose breed until the 1920s, when it fell out of favor and almost became extinct. The Dominique closely resembles the barred Plymouth Rock, but has a rose comb instead of a single comb and its beak is generally shorter and stouter. The barred Dominique is the only recognized variety.
