The Buckeye gets its name from the state of Ohio (“The Buckeye State”), where it was initially bred. It is the only recognized heritage breed developed by a woman. The Buckeye has a gorgeous mahogany red coloring with a black-tipped tail. Their eyes are a reddish bay color. The Buckeye is a very active breed, a good forager and known to be a good mouser. It has tight feathering and a short pea comb that resists frostbite, making the Buckeye particularly suited for colder temperatures. The Buckeye is known to be exceptionally friendly to both people and other chickens.
