The origin of the Appenzeller Spitzhauben can be traced to the Appenzell region in Switzerland. This unusual breed features large and deep nostrils, a horn-shaped comb and a very tall and striking crest. It is generally referred to simply as The Spitzhauben, which means “pointed hood.” The Spitzhauben is a small- to medium-sized bird. It has white skin and lays a small white egg. This is a particularly cold hardy breed, and according to those that own them, a particularly friendly one, too. The traditional varieties are the Silver Spangled, Golden Spangled and Black. The Chamois Spangled and Blue varieties are relatively recent additions. The Spitzhauben is a recognized standard breed in the U.K. but not in the U.S.
