Leghorn

Purpose: egg production
Egg Production: 5+ / wk
Egg Color: White
Origin: Italy
Heritage breed: Yes

The Leghorn is quite the production breed, laying 5 to 6 eggs a week. It’s no wonder this breed has long been a poultry farm favorite. The Leghorn is raised commercially for their eggs and these are typically what you find in your grocery store. Originally from Italy, the Leghorn is more slender and a bit smaller than many popular backyard breeds. There are more than a dozen breed varieties with the single-comb white being the most popular. The Leghorn can be skittish and noisy and may not do as well in confinement as other breeds. We’ve included the Leghorn in our list of breeds for people who want lots of eggs and are able to let their flock free range.
